Advancements in communication technology, through televisions and internet, have provided us with easier and faster access to the events happening around the globe. Despite this, it is undeniable that radio broadcasting, through the use of radio sets, is still an integral part in providing the public with up-to date news and information as well as entertainment.
Radio broadcasting is technically defined as a one-way transmission over radio-waves intended to reach a wide audience. It is done by linking radio networks to broadcast common programming via cable FM, local wire networks, satellite, and the Web. The history of radio broadcasting dates back to 1899 when wireless communication was setup between France and England by Guglielmo Marconi.
In 1906 it was claimed that Reginald Aubrey Fessenden, a naturalized American citizen born in Canada, performed the first radio transmissions of voice and music which occurred on Christmas Eve during said year. Since then, various experiments on radio communication have been done-from devices that allow only two parties to communicate to more advance projects allowing signal to be transmitted to larger audiences.
August 1920 marked the first ever news bulletin which was broadcasted by Station 8Mk in Detroit, Michigan. The Marconi Institute of Whisstle on the other hand started broadcasting entertainment news over the airwaves in 1922. From 1930's to the late 1940's, the "golden age" of radio broadcasting happened. However, in the 1980's, due to the advent of the television, a decline in the popularity and demand for radio broadcasting has been observed. The popularity of the television increased tremendously that radio broadcasting suffered. Later, by the year 1990, radio broadcasting started to once again pick up when FM radio station started to provide music, news, weather, and sports broadcast.
Radio sets, then and now are still the indispensible tools used in providing radio broadcasting to the public. This is despite the fact that people also have easier access to televisions and internet. As we all know, radios are great company for anyone anywhere and wherever they are. One can listen to radio sets may they be at home, in the office, in the car driving as well as in shopping malls and parks.
Though television has taken over much of the entertainment, news, and sports event duties, there are still a number of aspects where radios are more necessary. Local radio stations, for example, are vital for communities keeping members of the covered group up to date with local news and other upcoming events local to the community. Also, people wanting to have their voices and opinions heard often opt for radio phone-ins. More importantly, especially for travellers who just can't make it to a television, radio broadcasting is still the next best thing.
Today, broadcasting can be of any type. Depending on whom the target market of the radio station is, radio broadcasting contents. Radio broadcasting can either be a National Radio, Regional Radio station, a Local Radio, or a Community radio. These types of radio broadcasts cover or serve a specific amount of area. National, for example, covers radio broadcast nationwide while local radios provide broadcasts similar to information found on local newspapers. Other types of radio broadcasts are internet, cable and satellite stations, hospital, student or university campus radio, and/or pirate radio stations.
Radio sets are still indispensable to our day-to-day living. With its contributions not only in the propagation of information but in providing entertainment as well, radio broadcasting is still a thriving community that is still supported by people.
